In today's The Berlin Daily Sun (1/26/09) a letter to the editor by Linda Harriman Lalande not only deserves your attention, but should be placed on the front page of the newspaper. Although I have no idea who Linda is, her accounts of what transpired between John McCarthy of Cascade Flats and the paper mill are quite accurate as I remember the events. During those times I had a friend who worked at the mill and, who told me about the attention to details the leadership at the mill paid to environmental laws etc., because they knew John McCarthy was watching. I also remember John going after NH-DOT after a woman was killed at the intersection going to Cascade Flats. I believe that there's at least two points in Linda's letter that we need to focus on. 1-How just one person can influence the outcome of events by becoming involved. 2-That it doesn't take much to make someone betray his/her community. Right now, Berlin is in dire need of a John McCarthy to keep a watchful eye on Laidlaw Energy and the goings-on at the Burgess mill site. This polluted and contaminated center of our community is being considered for continued exploitation by Investors only interested in profits! This follows a period of two years when NADC had carte-blanche authorization to do whatever it wanted to do with anything above ground level. The site was mostly leveled and left there as an eye sore for the community to accept. The City allowed NADC and made no demand for environmental assessment or program to mitigate possible air and water contamination from run off or dust being blown off the site. I believe the City has a responsibility to its residents in determining what or if any contaminants are leaving the property. We need a modern day John McCarthy to make our public officials accountable for the mess left behind by the paper companies, North American Dismantling and whatever activity Laidlaw Energy may initiate on the site. When the dust flew-up the day the stacks were taken down, how many among us standing there thought that there was a good possibility that the dust was contaminated? How many people now wonder about the dirt and mud coming off the truck tires leaving the site and ending up on Unity Street may be contaminated? Are we concerned that this summer when the kids are heading to Community Field to play, some walking barefoot, will possibly be picking up contaminants off the street and ground? What is our City government preparing to assure us that the construction activities of Laidlaw will not present a health hazard to the people living on surrounding properties? ....John, I hope you're somewhere that allows you to intervene on behalf of the residents.
