Those of us interested in seeing Berlin prosper again may want to spend Wednesday night at the White Mountain Community College. The special presentation is all about the township of Success and what may happen there. (Remember the National Guard Training Facility) The first lesson in re-inventing Berlin may very well begin tonight (7/1/09) at 6pm
Success, in combination with the demolition of the remaining stack and boiler will be a good combination.
WN, Greg Whalen and Richard Cyr, no doubt the lead investors in the pack for the Burgess mill site,
have experience in and purchased the property for a price reasonable enough
to dismantle the remaining boiler and stack if things don't go their way,
and develop it the way it should be; like other projects they have been
involved with that are absent a smoke stack sticking up like a middle finger
against progress. Look into these guys. They don't need that boiler and
could do far better without it in my opinion.

In fact, I wonder how much more Whalen and Cyr believe that site is worth upon Laidlaw's failure to perform and after demolition. As developers of an island and the Pease Tradeport, I'm sure these guys could do wonders with a 120 acre clear slate dead center in the middle of any city. A 100 million dollar boiler blocking the site's potential would pale by comparison. There's no doubt in my mind that these guys are looking at the alternatives as the anchor location between massive trail networks from east to west side and up into Canada with unsurpassed view of the presidential mountain ranges. The potential has just become staggering with multimillion dollar grants available to the conservation fund for easements granted to the conservation fund. I wonder if some of these investors will be smart enough to lose the Laidlaw connection at their first failed payments (as they have demonstrated in Ellicottville) and take advantage of a far more advanced opportunity for profit. This conservation fund had a meeting tonight with reported overwhelming support by local fish and game, Appalachian mountain club, Senator Gregg's office, NH Forestry dept., Tri County Community Action, Coos County Commissioners, The City of Berlin, numerous businesses and foresters. The real meaning of the north country spoke volumes tonight.
