The Laidlaw/Berlin Station project is just about a given while the fundamental issues raised by Jon Edwards remain a mystery to most residents. The issues may be mysterious, but they won’t vanish with the approval of the Power Purchase Agreement by the PUC. All of the negative impacts of this power plant won’t really be felt for months, even years, at least not until the old recovery boiler is fired up, the pressure within the boiler rises to around 850psi, steam is released and the turbine starts spinning. Until then, the proponents of the project will walk around with smirks on their faces because they believe they’ve saved Berlin from its economic decline and defeated those who thought Berlin had an opportunity to go in a new and better direction. Once the plant is on line, Barry Kelly will feel the warmth of those burning wood chips deep in his heart and yes, that smoke from the stack will remind him of past prosperity! Steve Griffin will proudly point to those steel beams holding the structures together, but in his heart he’ll always know that this contraption closed the door to better uses for that property and to a better Berlin. Mayor Grenier will claim that he played a pivotal role in bringing biomass burning to the center of the City and for changing our favorite excuse/slogan from “It’s the smell of money” to, “It’s the sound of 40 jobs”. I’m sure he’ll do his best to put “the chimney” back on the City Seal to help the residents bring back that feeling of well-being that Barry so ably described. By then the residents of Northern Lights and St. Regis will own a variety of ear plugs and be wearing headphones when watching TV. Sales of those wide brooms used by East Side residents to clean their porches and driveways of sawdust will increase, helping the local economy. When living on the East Side, sealing windows with plastic to keep sawdust out will also cut down on heat loss in winter, a side benefit to living in close proximity to a mountain of smelly wood chips. Ahh, the traditions live on! Our kids learning at an early age how to dodge those chip trucks while on their way to Community Field/Park and that sawdust on ice cream is good for you. Having grown up on the East Side and now writing this post, I can finally understand why Mr. Grenier wanted this biomass plant so bad, it confuses our biological clocks and makes us all feel 30 years younger! Paul Grenier and Barry Kelley may have discovered the fountain of youth in the Laidlaw/Berlin Station project.
Well put, Rocky. If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny.

Great Editorial Cartoon by D.Rano! Rocky should post it.

Must be a gag order that went along with the payout to Mr. Edwards.
Almost miss his vindictive comments here and over at ihub. I said almost...
BTW, once we are up and rolling, Cate St. will also be throwing an annual Berlin Power BBQ with LLEG as esteemed guests for getting this entire party started. All the faithful readers and posters here at Byte & Chew are invited also where we can reminisce about the conversations that took place here.
What's the fave beer up in North Country? Pabst?
1st round on me....
Posted by: egrohs | June 06, 2011 at 01:09 AM
You know what they say about assumptions, Egrohs...just like you and most others here just watching the "evitable" unfold before the silence of the lambs. I'm certainly at peace with my input to the project and my position taken at this point. Try a Tuckerman's, the Pabst on the shelf is outdated I'm sure.
Posted by: jon | June 06, 2011 at 06:23 AM
Will any of the penny-stock puppet shareholders of LLEG be invited to the annual BBQ?
Posted by: Antonio Andolini | June 06, 2011 at 07:37 AM
I think jon has his fingers crossed that Full Approval will not happen in time, before those New Market Tax Credits expire. This was referenced by Mayor Grenier as being "that close" in His Report. The Question being, will No Tax Credits turn this project into a Pumpkin at the last minute? This "evitabillity" clould just have sweetened jon's Departure from the Interwhiner process...as well as the Face Saving line that He made it a "Better( Less Profitable & More Risky )Project". Only Time will Tell.

egrohs; The Word on Main St. in Berlin also has it that a Certain local "Business Partnership" was becoming way too strained, with all that Vindictiveness on B&C, over at ihub, as well as Statewide at the SEC & PUC levels. The Comments in the City Council were probably the last straw in the relations, and someone was told to Lay down Their Arms, or hit the Road! I doubt money could have helped the Deal. But it is amusing to think anyone would Sell Out Their Fiduciary Interests to their Clients with SO Much at Stake.
-Looking Forward to those Annual BBQ's... ( Roasts? )

Your assumptions lack validity, Warren. Your claims to what you'd be able to find amusing if your assumptions were accurate add to the concern as regards your mental stability. In light of those free BBQ's decreasing your grocery expenditure perhaps investing a few dollars locally might be what the doctor ordered for you. Time better spent than posting insults on this blog would be mowing your front yard hay field, and removing the collapsed canvass garage in your back yard. Just maybe that might be therapeutic for you and give you a demonstrative sense of accomplishment for a change. You have criticized people for the very faults you demonstrate so well. I encourage anyone to take a drive by 327 School Street to view what a few hours of work each week never does. Even your Laidlaw advertisement on your garage door is an insult to the company's progression and reminds me of classlessness demonstrated by the infamous Bartoszek as he made his way into town. Yet you refer to yourself as the "working" class. If you wish to see what the working class does follow a 60 hour week that produces local jobs for people, improves the quality of buildings as the years go by and doesn't leave any time to ever mow their own yard yet it gets done.
Posted by: jon | June 07, 2011 at 06:58 AM
Apparently, the Vindictiveness continues. Very amusing...lol!
Just what I was told jon, and it has a certain ring of truth to it. Who would want a business partner who constantly shot His mouth off...not to mention, on occasion, His Foot?
Hey, I'm not the one who say's You were paid off to shut your fat yap. But You reserved none of Your Venom for that comment? Did You get a Payout? Jim said everyone has a price. And egrohs just upped the ante...egrohs comment deserves a fuller answer.
Posted by: warren, | June 07, 2011 at 07:36 AM
This is getting all too personal and I'll delete any future comments that I believe are over the top. If that doesn't work I'll ban individuals who have nothing better to do than smear others. Enough said!

SEC Approves Transfer of Permit. BDS, Front & Center. The Pig is getting a Facelift. Not long now, eh?
Posted by: warren, | June 07, 2011 at 09:19 AM
I'm not sure I'd call setting the record straight vindictive or too personal nor would I say any venom was part of my reply to egrohs. Though the agreement Edrest reached with Cate St. is confidential I can assure you that a monetary payoff wasn't part of a mutually acceptable resolution I would have attempted to reach. That would have been completely contradictory to my stand throughout the past five years. Cate St. did buy out Clean Power's place in the queue which is one of the key reasons why I withdrew from further process. That fact had never been exposed until I asked for a breakdown of expenses for the Laidlaw project just weeks ago as a data request which is now part of public information.
I wish Cate Street and Clean Power well and not at the expense of the IPPS. I think both Cate St. and Clean Power follow that logic and understand that the 2025 initiative can be better accomplished with biomass facilities old and new. I understand that our good friend Mel Liston and Cate St. are even potentially sharing some ventures together indirectly. Berlin Station is a far better project today as a result of many many entities and as a result of proponents and opponents. As of today it is no longer "Laidlaw" due to the SEC's approval of new ownership. Laidlaw is a pink sheet company under the guise of what's hot in today's energy market. Cate Street and all related entities now in place for the Berlin project is a completely different situation as it is a hands on company with tremendous experience missing from the original ownership package within Laidlaw energy. Cate Street has done wonders especially out west. I think I'm most impressed by their 100% recycled drinking water and cleansing of oil refinery waste water. The other subcontracted entities are equally as impressive. None of these folks were part of the original package with the exception of Ray Kusche. It's a completely new company today with a tremendous track record absent a history of the likes of Laidlaw's tainted record of receivership, and vendors left unpaid along the way.

It's Happening, that's ALL that matter's for Berlin, jon. And Apparently there is Plenty of Revlon to go Around.
Posted by: warren, | June 07, 2011 at 10:03 AM
No, warren, that's not all that matters. To you, the initial project with it's plan that matched the scratched etching of Laidlaw you display on your front garage, would have done just fine. Thankfully, many disagreed with you, and the outcome can now be overwhelming better. Put some gas in that mower big guy.

Washington, D.C.-- The Securities and Exchange Commission today suspended trading in 17 microcap stocks because of questions about the adequacy and accuracy of publicly available information about the companies, which trade in the over-the-counter (OTC) market.
The trading suspensions spring from a joint effort by SEC regional offices in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Philadelphia; its Office of Market Intelligence; and its new Microcap Fraud Working Group, which uses a coordinated, proactive approach to detecting and deterring fraud involving microcap securities. The trading suspensions follow a similar suspension last week against Uniontown Energy Inc. (UTOG), based in Henderson, Nev., and Vancouver, Canada.
"They may be called ‘penny stocks,' but victims of microcap fraud can suffer devastating losses," said Robert Khuzami, Director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement. "The SEC's new Microcap Fraud Working Group is targeting the insiders and promoters, as well as the transfer agents, attorneys, auditors, broker-dealers, and other "gatekeepers" who flourish in the shadows of this less-than-transparent market."
George Canellos , Director of the SEC's New York Regional Office, added, "The investing public does not have accurate or adequate information about these securities to use in making informed investment decisions. Nonetheless, stock-touting websites, twitter users, and often anonymous individuals posting to Internet message boards have hyped many of these companies, and these promotional campaigns have been followed by spikes in share price and trading volume."

Berlin will be Thankful for Downtown Biomass. And JOBS,JOBS,JOBS! Also that Rocky & jon were unsuccessful in stopping Biomass on the Burgess Mill Site, which was the Aim of this Blog, Revlon aside. I see some Re-Elections in Our near Future! A BIG Thank You to All Commenter's at Byte & Chew who Faithfully Slapped this Duo down over the past 4 years!

The plant hasn't been built yet Warren. LLEG stockholders are watching their "million dollar investment" disappear today with the SEC's decision to suspend LLEG. I also hear the profitablity of the Laidlaw plant with the new PPS may be in doubt. Things aren't as rosie as they look on the surface. I also hear the officials of the towns that stand to lose their power plants if the Berlin project is built are starting to lobby against it. Taken collectively they represent more people that greater Berlin. Jon may yet be proven right.

Even Rocky admits that. The Lilputian IPP's will go away in time. Legal Expenses will only hasten their demise.

I haven't had anything to post and I don't really disagree with you. The point I was trying to make was the project is not as sure a thing as you think. In fact I've had someone in the know describe it to me as a "cluster f _ _ _" .
